A shore outside Leningrad in the winter of 1941:
Two women, mother and daughter, make their way back to the city with a handful of horse meat. The meat could have saved them both from starvation - if the daughter hadn't already eaten it in secret. During a long march, both women's lies, which are essential for survival, are put to the test.
