Lyosha wants to flee from his impending conscription in Putin's war. But in his hiding place in the woods he soon is met by an old friend and her Finnish wife. The two involve him in an anti-war railroad sabotage. Will Lyosha overcome his fatal tendency to stay out of trouble? Or did their generation miss its moment a long time ago?

At its core, Rail War is a story about the danger of political apathy. The majority of society, both in Europe and Russia, tends to focus on private life. But, as the saying goes, if you don’t engage in politics, politics will engage with you. Rail War portrays a Russian society waking up from a long slumber, with many now realizing they're in boiling water. Accordingly, our story serves as a warning to European viewers, urging them to become more active citizens, especially now as Europe faces the rise of right-wing populism. Europe’s own window of freedom could also close.
